3 Changes to Make Today that will make you Proactive

March 13, 20243 min read

“I like to encourage people to realize that any action is a good action if it's proactive and there is positive intent behind it.” - Michael J. Fox

Proactive:

An adjective that means, creating or controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than responding to it after it has happened. Proactivity is superior to procrastination. Even though procrastinators likely do get the desired result, they put off getting it far too long. Ultimately, their lack of action can affect their health, relationships, and even their wallet.

We’ve learned that there are root causes of procrastination that are tied to false thoughts and beliefs and that overcoming procrastination is more than developing new time management skill sets. Ultimately, breaking the procrastination habit includes doing some deep inner work to understand better why things get put off.

3 changes to make today

There's More Ways Than One Way to Become Proactive

Shifting from procrastination to proactivity isn’t one specific action. It’s a blend of actions that build on themselves and over time result in putting things off less and creating desired outcomes more. While you work on your mindset and get to the root of what drives your procrastination, you can easily take steps that are proactive in nature at the same time. Eventually, you’ll have a blossoming of proactivity that changes the way you engage tasks and the world. Here are three changes you can make today that will make you proactive.

1. Eat that Frog

Mark Twain famously said “If the first thing you do in the morning is eat a live frog, you can go through the rest of the day knowing the worst is behind you.”  He meant getting the worst thing off your to-do list as soon as possible is a proactive way to be brave and responsible at the same time.

2. Make a Plan

Failing to plan is planning to fail. This age-old wisdom drives proactive people. Making a plan creates a roadmap for what needs to be done. A proactive plan can include a goal or task. What needs to be done and sub lists of special information or tasks that need to be taken care of. You can be as detailed as you need to be to ensure success. You can make your plans at the end of the day for the new day ahead or first thing in the morning when you have a lot of energy.

2. Solve Some Problems

Being proactive means controlling a situation by causing something to happen rather than reacting to it. You can’t get through life without some problems coming along. Problem solving is a wonderful ability and even the most unskilled person can start solving problems. Tackle a problem that’s been keeping you from taking action. You don’t have to solve the problem in its entirety but you can take small steps that will start to lead towards solutions.

Banishing procrastination might not happen overnight, but you can spark a revolution against it with three powerful shifts today. As you burrow deep to unearth the seeds of your procrastination, empower yourself with a triple punch of small, proactive strides. These will snowball into a mighty force, catapulting you into the dynamic world of a proactive life, starting now.
